July 5 Fairbank Interpretive Walk
Hide details...
Join the Friends of the San Pedro River for an interpretive walk at
the Fairbank Historic Townsite in the San Pedro Riparian National
Conservation Area. Fairbank was an important transportation hub
during the silver boom in and around Tombstone and continued as a
railroad junction until just a few years ago. The restored Fairbank
Schoolhouse will bring back memories of all the one-room schoolhouses
of the American West. The walk will be about three miles and take
about two and one half hours (although there are several turn-around
points for those who want a shorter walk). Meet at the Fairbank
Schoolhouse (the parking area is about one quarter mile east of the
San Pedro River on Highway 82) at 8 AM. Be prepared for the warm
weather with good shoes, water, and a hat. For additional information
call the Friends of the San Pedro River office at 520-459-2555 or
check the website at

The San Pedro Riparian National
Conservation Area (NCA)
Congress designated the San Pedro National
Conservation Area (NCA), containing about 40 miles of upper San Pedro River, on November
18, 1988. The primary purpose for the establishment of the area is to conserve, protect
and enhance the desert riparian ecosystem, a rare remnant of what was once an extensive
network of similar riparian systems throughout the Southwest. |
"Riparian"
describes an area where plants and animals thrive because of an availability of water,
either at or near the lands surface. Riparian areas are the shores of lakes and
reservoirs, the banks and flood plains of intermittent or perennial streams, rivers, and
springs.
The NCA supports over 350 species of
birds, 80+ species of mammals, two native and several introduced species of fish, and more
than 40 species of amphibians and reptiles.
Under the stewardship of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), the NCA
contains more than 56,000 acres of public land in Cochise County, Arizona between the
U.S.- Mexican border and St. David. |
